Healthcare Ecosystems
An ecosystem has been defined as a set of capabilities and services that integrate value chain participants (customers, suppliers, and platform and service providers) through a common commercial model and virtual data backbone, to create improved and efficient consumer and stakeholder experiences, and to solve significant pain points or inefficiencies. The healthcare ecosystems of the future, like other ecosystems, will be centered on the consumer, in this case, the patient. The capabilities and services that form the healthcare ecosystems of the future will include, for instance: diagnostics and care services, home and self-care, remote care and traditional services that will be increasingly delivered near or in the home, and daily life activities such as fitness and nutrition, but also insurance, payment, and financial solutions. Healthcare ecosystems will be the lifeblood from which new offerings and business models will emerge.
EXAMPLE:
Switzerland-based group „Zur Rose“ started as a conventional pharmaceutical wholesaler. Nevertheless, the company has set the vision to become Europe’s leading healthcare ecosystem, in which e-commerce, online marketplaces, and e-health services band together. The platform Well, can, for example, be used to arrange telemedicine appointments, order medications from home with an e-prescription, manage COVID-19 vaccination certificates and other medical documents, or run digital symptom checks and provide preventive care recommendations. All health services on the app are quality checked, and all data is encrypted and stored securely.
Expert Statement Lena Hödl:
Let’s be optimistic and say that in a few years you can get healthy from the comfort of your home. If you are sick at home and you need a doctor, you can meet her online. The doctor sends you either a list of OTC (non-prescription) drugs or your digital prescription. You receive it and can order it directly online because your local pharmacy is connected to the same platform. Next thing you know, you get your products delivered in 30 minutes. I think this would be the kind of flow you would deserve as a patient.
